Galveston, TX Pickleball Cruise Report Day 1

A Tale of Oh-Dark-Thirty, Fish Calls, and Waiting for Our Ship To Come In!

Oh-dark-thirty. The hour when only coyotes and regrettable life choices roam the streets. That’s when we left Phoenix, groggy-eyed and caffeine-deprived, shuffling onto a plane bound for Houston.

Due to a a well-timed tailwind, Ky and I arrived in Houston ahead of schedule, where we waited to board a shuttle to Galveston. This shuttle was a rolling reality show of eager cruisers, all of whom had brought at least three too many suitcases for a week-long trip. Our excuse for too many suitcases is that we will be cruising for 12 days!

As we made the rounds in Galveston past two of the three cruise terminals, the driver stopped to let off excited vacationers, we felt like we were in a tour bus. As we passed one of the enormous floating cities, we could see that it was topped with an amazing amusement park with extreme rides.

After all the cruisers were off, the driver dropped us off right by our Airbnb. Galveston, in all its Victorian charm, welcomed us with grand old homes on Church Street, some in better shape than others. Ours had the kind of “vintage charm” that meant the exterior had character (read: needed paint), but the inside? It was really sweet and elegant with a very comfy mattress, and spotlessly clean!

After checking in, we made our way to Vida Agave, a Tex-Mex haven where the mango chamoy margarita was delicious and the food was fantastic. With full and deeply content stomachs, we set off for a beach stroll, feeling one with the sea breeze and slightly less one with our tight waistbands. We’re having to get warmed up for cruise food!

Now, picture this: a rock jetty, a fisherman, and me—an undisputed expert in fish calling. I asked the fisherman if he wanted to hear my fish call. He was eager to hear it. I let out my legendary fish call (patent pending), and—lo and behold, just minutes later, he got a bite! Coincidence? I think not. He laughed, I beamed, and the fish probably just wondered why on earth someone was summoning it with human noises. The video proof is available of me re-inacting it, if anyone wants to see it. If I get asked at least 3 times, I'll put it up YouTube - sure to be a viral sensation!

We continued our beach trek all the way to the boardwalk amusement rides. But, alas, I was not in the mood for spinning, flipping, or being catapulted into the sky. I had enough of that a couple of weeks ago while trying to evict Rocko!

We were, however, very much in the mood for sitting, so we summoned a trusty Lyft to rescue our weary feet. Tomorrow we’re looking forward to seeing family, who are disembarking from the Regal Princess, very same ship that we will be boarding. What are the odds of that? We’re already excited to check out the two on-board pickleball courts, but the weather may have other plans. But hey, I’ve already proven that I can summon fish, I’ll have to see if my sun-call works! Follow and like to see what tomorrow brings! Hugs!
